Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT DOES STATIC LEVEL MEAN?
The static level is the distance from the top of ground level to the top of the water level in your well.
WHY IS THE STATIC LEVEL IMPORTANT?
Static level is important because that is what determines whether or not you need a shallow well pump or a deep well pump. The actual pumping depth is from the static level, not the overall depth of the well. If you have a 200' deep well and a static level of 20', you are actually pumping from a 20' depth and not a 200' depth. In order to determine how deep a hand pump you need, base your decision on the static level.
HOW DEEP WILL A BISON SHALLOW WELL PUMP LIFT WATER?
The maximum depth for the Bison Shallow Well Pump is approximately 25'.
HOW DEEP WILL A BISON DEEP WELL PUMP LIFT WATER FROM?
Our BISON DEEP WELL HAND PUMP will lift water comfortably from a static level of approximately 200 feet.
WHAT IS THE WELL HEAD MADE OF?
Our BISON PUMP well head is made of 1 1/4" sch. 40 welded 304 Stainless Steel pipe and 304 Stainless Steel fittings with associated PVC and brass fittings. The pump is completely lead free.
WHAT IS THE BISON PUMP CYLINDER MADE OF?
The Bison Pump cylinder is made of 304 Stainless Steel with non-corrosive components. All of the pump cylinders are also lead free.
WHAT ARE THE LIFT RODS MADE OF?
The lift rod connected to the well head handle is 1/2" Stainless Steel rod. The lift rod in the pump cylinder and for the remainder of the 8' sections from the pump to the well head is 3/8" Stainless steel rod.
HOW DO I CONNECT THE WELL HEAD TO MY EXISTING WELL?
Bison Pumps has a standard stainless steel flange that we weld to our BPH-125 well head. This flange lines up with the bolt pattern of the Bison Pump BPWA well adapter. We also custom fabricate well connections to meet specific needs. Call us at 207-532-2600 or 1-800-339-2601.

WHY IS THERE SUCH AN INTEREST IN DEEP WELL HAND PUMPS?
We believe that every private water supply is a candidate for a Bison Pump. During these unsettled times of severe weather and turmoil, a Bison Hand Pump will provide you with uninterrupted access to your water supply in any situation. A step towards self sufficiency is achieved by installing a Bison Deep or Shallow Well Hand Pump on your water supply.
HOW TALL IS THE DEEP WELL HEAD PORTION OF THE PUMP?
The overall height of the Stainless Steel well head itself is 35" tall, measuring from the flange that connects to the well casing to the top of the handle of the pump. If your casing is 12 - 18" above the ground, the overall height of the pump mounted on the casing is a very comfortable pumping position.
HOW TALL IS THE SHALLOW WELL HEAD PORTION OF THE PUMP?
The overall height of the Stainless Steel shallow well head itself is 24" tall, measuring from the flange that mounts on the countertop to the top of the handle of the pump.
WHAT IS THE PUMP HANDLE MADE OF?
The standard handle is 304 stainless steel, square tube stock, which is comfortable to operate. We also offer an attractive oak handle. Check the parts list for further information.
CAN I INSTALL THE PUMP MYSELF?
If you have any amount of mechanical ability at all, you can install the pump yourself. However, we do recommend the assistance from another person to help assemble the pieces and lower them into the well.
CAN I CONNECT A GARDEN HOSE TO THE BISON HAND PUMP?
Yes. All Bison Hand Pumps have a 1" female IPS thread with a brass hose adapter in the outlet of the pump. All of our Bison Hand Pumps are shipped with the hose adapter fittings already installed in the outlet of the spout.
DOES A HAND PUMP HAVE TO BE SEALED WATER TIGHT TO THE TOP OF THE CASING?
The answer to this question is yes. BISON PUMPS has gone to great lengths to assure that our hand pump is sealed to the possible introduction of contaminates into your well. The flange which bolts to the well seal is water tight, the lift rod through the top of the well head is also a water tight connection. A pitcher pump or anything resembling any open type pitcher pump should not be installed on any potable water supply. Your water supply is a precious commodity and should be protected against any possible contamination. In your haste and anxiousness to get a hand pump installed in your well, please do not sacrifice quality and durability in selecting your deep well hand pump. BISON PUMPS recognizes these water quality concerns and we have designed our pump to meet these concerns.
